Also known as Cao da Serra da Estrela
A calm mountain guardian with a loud voice
Bred in the Portuguese mountains to guard flocks against wolves, the Estrela is loyal, watchful and independent. It bonds deeply with its family, is wary of strangers, and needs firm, patient handling and secure fencing.

This breed needs about 60 minutes of activity a day. Around 3 sitter-led sessions a week keeps that routine going when work or travel gets in the way.

It is a poor fit. This is a large, territorial guardian that needs space to patrol and neighbours who tolerate barking.
They are gentle and protective with their own family's children when well socialised. Their size means supervision is needed around small kids and visiting friends.
