Also known as Israeli Canaan Dog
A watchful desert survivor with sharp instincts
The Canaan Dog is a primitive pariah breed from the Middle East that has worked as a herder and guard for centuries. It is alert, intelligent and reserved with strangers, and needs early socialisation and plenty of daily activity.
Last updated
This breed needs about 90 minutes of activity a day. Around 5 sitter-led sessions a week keeps that routine going when work or travel gets in the way.

They are naturally reserved and watchful rather than outgoing. With good early socialisation they become calm and polite, but they will rarely be the friendliest dog in the room.
They are quick to sound the alarm at anything unusual. Training a quiet cue and giving enough exercise keeps it manageable, but they are not a silent breed.
It can be challenging. The breed is independent and sensitive, so it suits an owner who commits to socialisation and consistent, gentle training.
