A clever, cat-like hound that yodels instead of barking
The Basenji is an ancient central African hunting hound, known for its curled tail and unusual yodel-like voice instead of a bark. It is clean, clever and very independent, and needs firm, patient handling plus plenty of mental stimulation.

They do not bark like other dogs but make a yodel-like sound called a baroo, plus growls and whines. They are quieter than most breeds but not silent.
They are intelligent but independent and can be stubborn. Patient, reward-based training with plenty of variety works best.
They shed lightly and groom themselves much like cats. A quick weekly brush and the occasional bath is usually enough.
